Police officer pays for food and shelter for homeless woman and daughter

A hungry, homeless mother and her one-year-old daughter showed up in the lobby of a Maryland police department last week. She said she was the victim of domestic violence and in desperation, had nowhere else to go.

Cpl. Che’ Atkinson stepped in to help.

Atkinson’s superiors documented his kind actions and thousands on Facebook shared what he did. He rented a room at a hotel for the woman and her child and also provided them with food and drinks.

The Prince George’s County Police Department posted about it on August 28th and since then it has been like 14,000 times and shared 3,500 times.

Atkinson had first seen her on Wednesday morning in the lobby. She had been staying at a homeless shelter, but left for an undisclosed reason.

Atkinson attempted to get a distant relative to pick them up. The relative agreed, but was detained for a day. Atkinson found them Thursday Morning in the lobby.

It had been two days since the pair had eaten.

After a night in the hotel, the two were reunited with their family member.

Atkinson is humble about his contribution.

“I had the extra money. What would it hurt just to put them up for a night to make sure they’re safe?”
