Huffington Post Moves Trump Campaign to Entertainment Section

Today the Huffington Post has made a statement regarding their coverage of Donald Trump’s controversial presidential campaign.

Their announcement:

After watching and listening to Donald Trump since he announced his candidacy for president, we have decided we won’t report on Trump’s campaign as part of The Huffington Post’s political coverage. Instead, we will cover his campaign as part of our Entertainment section. Our reason is simple: Trump’s campaign is a sideshow. We won’t take the bait. If you are interested in what The Donald has to say, you’ll find it next to our stories on the Kardashians and The Bachelorette.

This response comes after Donald Trump’s offensive remarks regarding Mexican immigrants, as well as his El Chapo incident. Not to mention his campaign promotional photo with Nazi soldiers in the background. Trump’s campaign has been confusing to those on either side of the aisle, especially with his high (and rising) poll ratings among the Republicans.

The Huffington Post’s Washington bureau chief, Ryan Grim, called Trump “a clownshow”. Trump’s campaign responded with saying:

“The only clown show in this scenario is the Huffington Post pretending to be a legitimate news source.”

The statement also emphasized Trump’s success so far in polls across the board.

This feud appears to stretch further back than simply the campaign, and Trump’s campaign statement also notes this. Trump tweeted several personal attacks against editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington back in 2012.

From Business Insider’s interview with Ryan Grim:

Business Insider also asked Grim whether the decision to move Trump coverage to entertainment was effectively “having it both ways.” In other words, The Huffington Post is getting attention and credit for ignoring Trump while still getting traffic from stories about his White House bid on the entertainment section.

“Yes, though we have always been a mix of high and low,” Grim said. “All this says is that we’re properly classifying him as low.”
