She was born a female but identified completely as a male. Giovanna Arrivoli, 41, was known as “Gio” around Rome and Naples and was a ruthless Mafiosi who was aspiring to take command of a Camorra crime family when she was recently tortured and gunned down by certain rivals who did not view her as an heir apparent.
Though she was going through surgery to have her gender re-assigned, she wasn’t completely through with it but that was no matter. She was murdered by her rivals in a way that only men are murdered in that world. Her jaw was severely dislocated and broken and she was subjected to torture for many days. Finally, the most ominous way of all via three direct gunshots; two shots to the heart and a final one into her brain.
The final indignity was her burial in a Mafia fashion that let everyone know that she had betrayed someone and had to pay the ultimate price. She was buried in the ground head first as a signal to all that her murder was vengeance for some slight and some unforgivable betrayal and traitorous actions. All of this speculation was via local police and Italian crime experts.
One theory police are following is that Arrivoli owed a huge amount of money for drugs that she had not sold as yet. They believe she was given an ultimatum of three days to deliver the money or get buried head down. The police believe this a viable theory because Arrivoli’s girlfriend called them after only two days and let them know that there was going to, perhaps, be trouble. Another theory is that the brothers in law of Arrivoli actually had betrayed the family and that Arrivoli knew about it.
While mafiosi do occasionally kill women and children, it is rare and they are never tortured like the men are. It seems that the Camorra don’t seem to care if a person is gay or transgender. All that seems to matter is if they can earn and lead. What does seem certain about the murder is that Arrivili wasn’t murdered because she was transgender and undergoing reassignment to become a man.
