A Colorado jury has sentenced 27-year-old gunman James Holmes to life without possibility of parole for killing 12 people in 2012’s Aurora shooting.

Holmes was convicted of 165 counts of murder, attempted murder, and an explosives charge. The trial lasted three months, during with Holmes did not testify on his own behalf or make a statement expressing remorse.

The defense argued that Holmes was insane during the shooting and was thus not responsible for his actions. Of the twelve-person jury (comprised of nine women and three men), it was reported that two jurors were unsure of the death penalty, and one adamantly against it.

Without a unanimous agreement, Holmes would automatically receive life without parole.
