Teens in China Coming Out

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage was landmark for the U.S., but has also made ripples elsewhere in the world.

In China, where homosexuality has been legal since 1997 but the government doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage or civil unions, the topic of homosexuality remains touchy.

The Supreme Court decision has opened up greater discussion of sexuality, with users on Chinese social media platform Weibo engaging in a major discussion regarding coming out to your parents through their current affairs program called “Let’s Talk”. Some users shared stories of surprising acceptance, while others had families who rejected them. This still happens frequently in America as well, but it looks like younger generations are becoming more progressive and accepting.

The “Let’s Talk” conversation was read by over 12 million people, and many users shared photos of them and their same-sex partners.
