Around noon today, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy posted similar messages on both their Facebook pages announcing that they had broken up. The two were together for 40 years, since The Muppet Show premiered in the mid-1970’s.

Kermit’s Facebook post asked for understanding and privacy –

“After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Miss Piggy made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television (“The Muppets”/Tuesdays 8pm this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter. Thank you for your understanding.”

Miss Piggy’s post used most of the same language, but with a characteristic Miss Piggy-esque twist:

“After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. This is our only comment on this private matter… unless we get the right offer. Thank you for your understanding.”

All this relationship drama comes just a month before the Muppets return to ABC in The Muppets. According to producer Bill Prady, the show is meant to be “exactly the same and completely different” from the original.
