The UN has dismissed Maine archaeologist Barry Clifford’s claims that he had found the wreck and treasure of the infamous Captain Kidd off the coast of Madagascar. According to the UN, the supposed 50 kg silver ingot that Clifford had found was actually 95% lead.

The treasure was presented to the president of Madagascar in May, shortly after its supposed discovery.

The UN’s statement states that while there are many historic wrecks in the area, “what had been identified as the Adventure Galley of the pirate Captain Kidd has been found by the experts of the STAB to be a broken part of the Sainte-Marie port constructions. No ship remains have been found.”

In 2014, Clifford claimed to have discovered the wreck of Christopher Columbus’ flagship off the coast of Haiti; this was also disproved by the UN.
