Beijing to host 2022 Winter Olympic Games

I’ve still got my fuhua qipao that I bought in China back in 2006. I cut out the logo from my 2008 Beijing Olympics shirt.

Having left China in 2007, I can only imagine the excitement that is going on today.

Beijing was named host of the 2022 Olympic Winter games today.

It came by way of a closed-door vote by International Olympic Committee members or the IOC. It 128th IOC session was held Kuala Lumpur on Friday afternoon.

This is great news for many reasons. This is the Olympics that could have a venue running off of clean energy as neighboring city and joint bidder Zhangjiakou is determined to use renewable resources to power 55% of its electricity demands.

Clean energy for the Olympics?

Beijing made its case highlighting that it was a safe choice because it had already proved it could stage the Games.

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a letter of appreciation to President Thomas Bach on Friday evening giving his thanks.

“To present a fantastic, extraordinary and excellent Winter Olympics is the aspiration of over 1.3 billion Chinese people. We will fulfill all our commitments and witness, together with the people of all other countries and the IOC, the advent of a new phase in the development of the Olympic winter sports and in the spread of the Olympic spirit,” the letter read.

There was a celebration held in Olympic Park in Beijing on Friday evening.

Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee Liu Yunshan was in attendance at that celebration and had this to say,”The 1.3 billion Chinese people embrace Olympic Movement again. This not only helps develop the winter sports in China, but also strengthen the friendship and mutual understanding between the Chinese people and the people from other countries and regions.”

Guess it’s time to order my new qipao!
