Taylor Swift runs into trouble marketing to China

Taylor Swift recently announced the launch of a clothing line based around herself and her 1989 World Tour in China, appealing to a huge market. The clothing line is supposed to be partnered with local e-commerce giant JD.com and the Alibaba group.

She inadvertently stirred controversy with her initials and year of birth (also now tour name and album title), as TS 1989 reminds the Chinese government of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which happened in 1989.

According to the Guardian, Tiananmen Square is so touchy a date that the Chinese government has censored any consecutive combinations of 6, 4, and 89 on Chinese social media.
