Star Wars set to surpass Avatar’s record

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens continues to dominate the box office and is set to surpass the record held by James Cameron’s Avatar, having already pulled in $740.3 million, behind Avatar’s $760.5 million. New Year’s weekend earnings domestically were a solid $88.3 million, the third straight weekend that the movie has topped the domestic box office. The Force Awakens also holds the record for best opening weekend, best second weekend, and best third weekend.

If the film doesn’t surpass Avatar on Monday, it will probably make it there by Tuesday.

Meanwhile, globally the film is in sixth place with a $1.51 billion box office. In that arena, the film is still distant from claiming Avatar’s top spot of $2.79 billion but The Force Awakens has yet to open in China, the largest global market for movies.
