Scientists devise a possible plan to cloak Earth from an extraterrestrial attack

A professor of astronomy, and one of his graduate students Columbia University, believe that they have come up with a fool proof way to protect Earth from an unfriendly extraterrestrial invasion. This approach seems to fly in the face of traditional astronomy and other scientific research that has been trying to independently confirm that extraterrestrial life even exists anywhere.

Astronomy professor David Kipping and his graduate aid and student, Alan Teachy, have recently published a paper trying to demonstrate how the high powered use of lasers could possibly lead to the ability to actually hide and cloak Earth from any vantage point from outer space. Both scientists are under the presumption that humans are hardly alone in the universe and that there just may be extraterrestrial races who are not benevolent toward us.

Their plan is to point laser beams at particular star systems where the scientists believe an extraterrestrial race might live. By doing that, they say that it would compensate for the dimness of the light coming from Earth when it travels across the Sun. Earth scientists can already determine where a planet might be by observing the dimming of the light from the star as a possible planet passes before it in transit.

“We have the technology,” said Teachy. “It’s surprisingly feasible to do this. We could do it this year if we wanted to.”

Many noted scientists, including Stephen Hawking, believe that a malevolent race could destroy the human race faster than blinking an eye as their technology would sure to be hundreds, if not thousands, of years ahead of us. Of course, this plan doesn’t take into consideration any races that may already here or those races and ships who may be parked or orbiting the planet already.

Despite that, the argument seems to have now shifted from the scientific community simply wondering and postulating to becoming pro active with regard to trying to hide ourselves in defense of a potential attack. Kipping’s and Teachy’s paper was published online last week at Britain’s Royal Astronomical Society. They postulate that if they fired the laser for ten hours once a year it will keep Earth from being discovered.

Again, assuming we haven’t been “discovered” already.
