Regal Entertainment Group, a movie theater chain based in Knoxville, Tennessee, has announced that it will begin searching the bags of patrons in the wake of recent movie theater attacks.

The company’s website now states that

Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America. Regal Entertainment Group wants our customers and staff to feel comfortable and safe when visiting or working in our theatres. To ensure the safety of our guests and employees, backpacks and bags of any kind are subject to inspection prior to admission. We acknowledge that this procedure can cause some inconvenience and that it is not without flaws, but hope these are minor in comparison to increased safety.

Regal is the largest movie theater group in the United States.

It is not clear when the searches began, but local TV stations in several states reported film-goers’ bags being searched earlier this month.

Recent theater attacks in the U.S. include those by a man with an axe in Nashville, Tennessee, and a gunman in Lafayette, Louisiana.
