Near Booysens station south of Johannesburg, a moving train collided with a stationary train on the same track at rush hour; one derailed. The cause of the accident is unknown.
Spokeswoman Nana Radebe said 326 people were rushed to nearby hospitals, and that firefighters were still searching for passengers that could be trapped.
Some were treated at the scene by paramedics. Other uninjured passengers were bussed home.
No fatalities have been reported.
