Jim Webb drops out of Democratic race

Jim Webb is ending his bid to become the Democratic nominee for the 2016 presidential election.

He told reporters that he is still considering an independent run. Webb said he could not see himself endorsing any of the candidates.

Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, Webb argued the Democratic Party has moved away from “millions of dedicated, hard-working Americans.”

“For this reason, I am withdrawing from any consideration of being the Democratic Party’s nominee for the presidency,” he said.

The former US Senator for Virginia has had a rough campaign, only spending 20 days campaigning in Iowa and 4 in New Hampshire, leading some to speculate it’s more of a vanity play.

Webb served as Secretary of Navy under President Ronald Reagan following a decorated military career. He was a Republican at the time, later switching party affiliations though he has often expressed frustrations with the Democrats.

He has not clearly indicated whether he still considers himself a Democrat.

“Some people say I am a Republican who became a Democrat, but that I often sound like a Republican in a room full of Democrats or a Democrat in a room full of Republicans,” Webb said. “Actually, I take that as a compliment.”
