In December, former congressman Michael Grimm pleaded guilty to one account of tax fraud. On Friday, Judge Pamela K. Chen sentenced him to 8 months in prison.

News of Grimm’s crimes was brought to light by a federal investigation of his campaign fundraising. It was found that Grimm had under-reported wages and profits for his New York City restaurant Healthalicious, thus committing tax evasion. He also paid immigrant employees in cash.

Grimm is a former marine and FBI special agent. As congressman, he represented Staten Island and areas of Brooklyn.

Grimm pleaded with the judge to grant him “the opportunity to redeem [himself].” Judge Chen told Grimm that his moral compass needed “some reorientation.”
