A couple from Layland, West Virginia were arrested by local police over the weekend when they attempted to sell their three month old infant. According to the police reports, the couple tried to sell the child to get money for drugs.

Ashley Harmon, 25, and Jonathan Flint, 20, tried to sell their baby to their next door neighbor but when the asking price of $1000 was turned down, the couple offered it to the neighbor for $500. The sheriff of Fayette County, Steve Kessler said that he has seen many strange things in his career but this has to be one of the strangest.

“Law enforcement officers,” Kessler said, “frequently deal with some pretty strange situations. A situation like this is really out of the ordinary, though.”

Both Harmon and Flint were arrested on Friday after the police were called by the next door neighbor, Carolyn Redden. Redden said the couple approached her back on May 28 and asked her if she wanted to buy their baby. Redden told local media outlets that the baby had looked sick to her and she told the couple that she was not interested in actually buying their baby from them.

Harmon and Flint then asked Redden if she would watch the baby for them while they made a quick trip to the store. Redden agreed but told media outlets that the couple never came back to get the baby. Redden eventually called 911 because the baby began shaking uncontrollably and she couldn’t get the tiny infant to stop crying.

Further shock came to Redden when the EMT’s arrived to help the baby. She said that one of the paramedics told her that it looked as if the infant was going through drug withdrawals. The child is now in the hands of the local child welfare agency. Harmon and Flint are in jail with their bail set at $100,000. They have been formally charged with intentional child neglect and attempting to sell a child.
