BY KEVIN SAWYER – In German, Doppelganger means “double walker”. They are your double in the world. Many believe that there is some one that looks exactly like them walking around somewhere. Many famous, and not so famous, have encountered theirs at one time or another. Here are just a few people who have actually encountered their exact look alike:
- The legendary French writer of short stories, Guy de Maupassant, told the story of how, very late in his life, his doppelganger just showed up one night in his room while he was writing. He said that his frightening looking twin just sat down in a chair and began telling him exactly what he was writing and also what he was planning to write.
- Back in the 18th Century, the famous German poet, Johann von Goethe, told the bizarre tale of meeting his double while riding his horse on a back road. As he was riding, another rider was approaching from the opposite direction. He noticed that it was him only he was wearing a different suit that was grey with gold trim. Eight years later, von Goethe was riding that same road when his doppelganger, once again, galloped past him without a word. Von Goethe immediately reigned his horse and glanced down at himself. He was wearing the exact same grey and gold suit his doppelganger had been wearing eight years before.
Lanny Doftus recently posted this at his social media sites. His father and his doppelganger actually work at the same company.
- Queen Elizabeth I, of England, walked into her bedroom one day and was startled to see herself all formally laid out on her own bed. The woman on the bed was apparently dead. A very short time after Elizabeth saw her double, she died.
- An American woman named Sherry relates a true story of how she and her husband took their two daughters, 15 and 8, down to Sanibel Island, Florida on vacation. Late one afternoon, Sherry decided to walk alone on the beach when she suddenly heard screaming coming from the ocean. Not far off, she saw a little girl flailing and calling for help. The little girl looked exactly like her daughter! She started out into the ocean to try and save her but something caused her to hold up. She had a gut feeling that it wasn’t her daughter even though the drowning girl looked exactly like her. She swam back to shore and ran back to the cottage where her family was staying. Her 8 year old met her at the door with a big hug and smile. Sherry, to this day, is convinced that the little girl drowning in the ocean had been her daughter’s doppelganger and that she was trying to lure her into the ocean to drown.
Austin Mark bumped into his doppelganger while out Christmas shopping one year at an IKEA store.
Sophie Robehmed and Lauren Hatcher, both from England, found one another after Sophie decided to make a determined and world wide search for her doppelganger. Turns out they had a mutual friend and didn’t live that far from one another.
Many people are convinced that their “double walker” is out there walking around and it is only a matter of time before they bump into one another. So, have you seen your doppelganger lately?
