On Sunday, police received notification from a grocery store that a gas station clerk had been paid in a $5 bill that he suspected to be counterfeit. 45-year-old Pamela Downs of Kingsport, Tennessee, was identified and arrested. Downs claimed that she had received the $5 elsewhere and hadn’t noticed its illegitimacy, but when police searched her purse they found another $100 bill. Both counterfeit notes were poor made; they were printed on regular computer paper and the two sides had been glued together. Downs was taken to jail, where she admitted to printing counterfeit money in her basement, and claimed that she read online that President Barack Obama had passed a law allowing people with a fixed income to print their own money.

When officers searched Downs’ apartment, they found an estimated $30,000 to $50,000 of counterfeit bills, as well as paper, scissors, and glue. Downs has been charged with criminal situation and counterfeiting.
