Fundraising bump for Carson after Muslim comments

GOP frontrunner (behind the Donald), Ben Carson, has seen an increase in his fundraising totals following his comments about a Muslim president.

Ben Carson raised more than $500,000 after his controversial remarks in which he said he would not support and Muslim president, campaign communications director Doug Watts said Monday.

“There really is a broadening of the base that’s given us access to a whole lot of people,” Watts added, noting many of Carson’s supporters and donors are first-time participants in the political process.

Carson’s comments may have garnered wider support, but he also received ample backlash, including from other GOP candidates. He later clarified his statements saying that he would support a Muslim for president if they renounced Shariah Law, and when asked again on Sunday Carson did not back down.

When asked if he felt the statements had raised him in the polls, Carson said: “There’s no question that the people of America recognize that America is a unique place, and I don’t think that anybody wants to give that away. We want to be fair to everybody, but we certainly don’t want to change it into something else,” he said.
