A middle school teacher from Mobile, Alabama has been suspended pending further investigation for issuing a math quiz to her students that has caused outrage among both students and parents. The questions to the math quiz were framed using references to such things as girls “getting knocked up” as well as drug deals, drive by shootings and prostitution.
The ten question math quiz was given out by the teacher at the Cranford Burns Middle School. One student took a photo of the quiz and texted it to his mother. That was when the outrage began and parents began calling the school demanding an explanation from school officials. Mobile school officials said they have placed the teacher, who they refuse to identify, on administrative leave and have publicly apologized for the incident.
A parent told Mobile’s WPMI, an NBC affiliate, that the teacher’s name is JoAnne Bolser who is a long time language arts teacher who was scheduled for retirement this year. Though known as a strict teacher, parents are still befuddled as to why she would hand out such a quiz. The children, when first seeing the quiz, looked up in astonishment but were told by Bolser that it wasn’t any sort of joke and that they had to complete it and turn it in to her.
The ten question math quiz was not actually created by the middle school teacher. It is actually an internet meme that has been around since the early 1990’s and has been given elsewhere. The quiz is called “The City of Los Angeles High School Math Proficiency Exam” or, more simply, “The LA Math Proficiency Test”.
Here are just a few questions from the exam:
- Dwayne pimps 3 ho’s. If the price is $85 per trick, how many tricks per day must each ho turn to support Dwayne’s $800 a day crack habit?
- Tyrone knocked up 4 girls in the gang. There are 20 girls in the gang. What is the exact percentage of girls that Tyrone has knocked up?
- Pedro got 6 years for murder. He also got $10,000 or the hit. If his common law wife spends $100 of his hit money a month, how much money will Pedro have left when he gets out?
- Ramon has an AK-47 with a 30 round clip. He usually misses 6 out of every 10 shots and he uses 13 rounds per drive by shooting. How many drive by shootings can Ramon attempt before he has to steal enough ammunition and reload?
- Leroy has 2 ounces of cocaine. If he sells an 8 Ball to Antonio for $320, and 2 grams to Juan for $85, what is the street value of the rest of his hold?
