Performers of Color Take Musical Acting Tonys

The Tony Awards were hosted by James Corden on Sunday night, and made history by awarding all four of its musical acting awards to performers of color.

The awards went to one star of The Color Purple and three Hamilton castmembers for the 70th Tonys.

Leslie Odom Jr. earned the best actor in a leading role in a musical award for his performance in Hamilton; Daveed Diggs scored best actor in a featured role in a musical for Hamilton; Renée Elise Goldsberry took home best actress in a featured role in a musical for Hamilton; and Cynthia Erivo received the best actress in a leading role in a musical award for The Color Purple.

The Tonys marked the significant moment with a tweet: “For the first time in #TonyAwards history, all four musical acting awards have gone to people of color.”

Hamilton, already critically acclaimed and beloved, was the unsurprising big winner of the night, taking 16 nominations and 11 Tonys, including best musical.
