Disney & Marvel threaten to boycott Georgia

Disney and its subsidiary Marvel Studios have expressed their opposition to Georgia’s pending religious liberty bill, which sits waiting for a decision from Governor Nathan Deal. They will take their business elsewhere “should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law.”

Due to generous tax incentives, the state of Georgia has become a production hub, with Marvel shooting its sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy at Pinewood Studios outside Atlanta currently. The location was also where Captain America: Civil War was shot last summer.

“Disney and Marvel are inclusive companies, and although we have had great experiences filming in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law,” a Disney spokesman said on Wednesday.

The Motion Picture Association of America, which represents major studios, has already spoken out against the legislation, calling it “discrimatory” but expressing confidence that Nathan Deal wouldn’t sign it.

The bill passed through the Georgia legislation last week. It protects religious officials from having to perform any same-sex marriage ceremonies, and would permit faith-based organizations the right to deny services or employment to those who violate their “sincerely held religious belief.”
